Service : 10/10

Ambience : 9/10 (You would probably think twice before going in because it is very quiet from the outside. This could be because it is winter and no one sits outside). They have a very nice outdoor area, which would have been perfect during spring, summer, and autumn. Getting there, though, is another story, rather, like a challenge climbing up the elevations!

Food : Chef’s Course –
Amuse – Bouche – octopus with a grape cut in slices, burrata cheese. It was perfect in size, taste, and display. 10/10

Fried Scallop Crab, Raspberry & Fennel Dressing, Green Salad – I like the raspberries in the dressing but not so much the Fennel dressing itself. The crab and scallops were wrapped in a perfectly crunchy fried “skin”. The taste though may not be for everyone. I had mixed feelings on my tongue. It was not bad, but it was not something I enjoyed among the course. 7/10

Gamba, Butter Oil Sauce, Rucola, Red Tomato Pasta – this came as a surprise to me. It was really good, although I wished the prawn would be more tender. Nevertheless, this pasta made me want to try their pasta selection! 9.5/10

Snapper Papillote, Ratatouille, Tomato Coulis – I am not a fish person. I must say though, the snapper did not taste too ‘fish-y’ and with the onions and seasoning, it was edible to me. This rating is probably biased as I am not a fish person. 6.5/10

Tenderloin, Grilled Vegetables, Mushroom Sauce (additional KRW10,000) – as I always do, I ordered my tenderloin medium done. It came slightly more well than the medium I was hoping for. I noticed though that I quite frequently had been getting more well than medium done steak in 2023, climate change in the kitchen? As such, the tenderloin was less juicy than I hoped it would be. The mushroom sauce was good. Overall 8.5/10

Tiramisu & Ice Cream – the tiramisu was perfect! The vanilla ice cream was good too. 10/10

I went back for a second night and had their ala carte menu. I ordered –
Beef Carpaccio – portion wise, would be perfect for 2 pax. Taste wise, with the cheese and cherry tomatoes, I thought it was good. I prefer not squeezing the lemon. 9.5/10

Seafood saffron risotto – the texture of the risotto is al dante, which is not common in Asia, as risottos are either too soft and soupy that your throat gets queasy fast or too hard that it makes you wonder if you had ordered “rice” instead. Yes, risotto is rice too, but you know what I mean. The seafood juice blended well with the risotto without leaving that “extra seafood taste” that every bite taken with different seafood would taste differently. The saffron was really just a hint and that is not so bad because too much saffron can be too overwhelming for you to taste anything else. It also came with a king prawn, which tasted rather fresh. 9.5/10

Overall, I would rate my experience 9.5/10. Interestingly, they have non-alcoholic wine selection.

While keeping it safe, practicing the “new norm” (term which I somehow dislike), we try to keep sane. A real wanderer would understand …

This is a throwback from a couple of weeks ago. We all know how it is possible now to get this kind of suites at the price of what would have been the price of executive rooms (or whatever they are called nowadays), under normal circumstances ie pre the pandemic.

It has been a (long) while since I last posted a review (of any sort). Had been busy with the work that pays me enough to enjoy my hobbies. So, here goes (ratings are [x] over 5) …

Checking in – 4.5/5

There is supposed to be a “counter” dedicated for ALL members but the sign was not very obvious and seemed to be opened to anyone. Note – at the time of checking in, there was no big crowd, 2 others before me and there were 3 counters. As an ALL member, since the queue was very short, I did not mind but as a paid member, anyone would be upset if the queue is long. Something Accor hotels (in fact all hotels with paid membership) must pay attention to as it is one of the paid privileges.

Rooms – 4/5

Nothing particularly wrong or to my dislike but why 4 out of 5? Well, for a suite, the coffee/tea facility corner did not quite match. Yes, there was the sophisticated coffee machine with the coffee capsules but, the corner was very small, cramped with the cups, glasses, etc, located behind the work desk, which made it a little inconvenient when the work desk is occupied (usually by me, working).

The Bed(s) – 5/5

Hotels just have the best beds and pillows, most hotels, and those under the Accor group, have not disappoint me so far. I love feather pillows, tonnes of them, and I am sorry to all the ducks, birds and such.

The Bathroom – 5/5

I have nothing to complain. The bathtub was clean and of good size, the heater worked great, the shower was awesome and the wardrobe was inside the bathroom (which is not common), making it so convenient.

The Ancillary Facilities – No Rating

1. WiFi – I rarely connect to the hotel WiFi when in Malaysia. Generally because the LTE network is usually better.

2. Breakfast/F&B – Not going to rate this area for no specific reasons. I just do not think that I should for fear that it will be misunderstood as rating on the restaurants.

Conclusion

Well, it is a good hotel at a great location ie opposite the Pavilion (accessible by foot via the covered bridge). Service was warm and welcoming. Parking though, was close to horrible. It was near horror driving a big car/MPV. Other than the car park, all is good.

Closing Statement

The photos are mine. This is a personal view and is not a paid review. To each, is a different experience.

P.S. – Photos are of 2 different junior suites located on different floors.

I Have This to Say to Air Asia

#gina #ginatravels #ATEbygina #2The9s #ToTheNinesPLT #travelessentials #travelbug #wanderlust #TripAdvisor #TopContributor #globetrotter #globetrotting #newdiscoveries #lifestyle #AirAsia #SouthKorea

The first time I flew with Air Asia was in early 2000 for a quick holidays in Seam Reap, Cambodia. There were many empty seats.

Since then, it went on many years before I flew with Air Asia again. I vaguely remember the reason I chose not to fly with Air Asia.

Perhaps the first flight after my long “avoidance” from flying with Air Asia was when I flew to Busan, South Korea in 2012. Of course, the fare was the cheapest then, both to Busan and Seoul. Even made my sister join me in Seoul before flying to Jeju-do and returning to Kuala Lumpur via Busan. Since then, perhaps 90% of my flights in and out of South Korea had been with Air Asia. Yes, since then, I visit South Korea on a frequent basis that colleagues and bosses regarded it as my hometown. Well, perhaps because I am likely in either Seoul or Busan whenever there are long weekends.

If you recall, I did say, “… the fare was the cheapest then, …” Why? Because nowadays, Air Asia is not always the cheapest airline flying to Seoul. In no way am saying the add ons are hidden charges causing the fare to increase. I agree with Tan Sri Tony on this. You pick and choose the add ons having awareness of the costs. Un-check all the add ons and you will get the “original” price that got you to the Air Asia booking page in the first place, cheapest or not.

Cheap to me is no longer the appropriate description of the fare. Henceforth, I will describe it as reasonable. What is reasonable fare? Well, I believe it means getting the most out of every penny I have paid. I no longer go for the cheapest but for the most reasonable. As a result, often nowadays I fly business class when the fare is between the cheapest Air Asia fare and the fare other airlines have to offer versus each of their very own business class fares. Confused? To put it simply, comparing the fare for KUL-ICN-KUL flights on Air Asia economy class vs KUL-ICN-KUL Malaysia Airlines business class vs KUL-ICN-KUL Air Asia business class resulted in KUL-ICN-KUL Malaysia Airlines business class as most reasonable, I will go with Malaysia Airlines. Generally that is how I decide on which airline to fly especially for my annual holidays in Europe. Still confused? Well, the fare is the one in the middle and it is on business class. If you are flying economy only and have no intention of paying extra, this makes no difference and sense to you. By the way, cheapest Air Asia fare to me means the fare inclusive of baggage allowance of 20 kg and food.

What I want to say is this; Air Asia have since, allowed many people to travel places. Personally I feel this is the case when I travel in and out of South Korea. Most recent “good deed” by Air Asia is the direct flights to Jeju-do. Without which I would have to either fly to Busan or Seoul in order to get to Jeju-do. I visited Jeju-do for the second time last month. Flying in, I had this running through my mind; I feel grateful for Air Asia’s decision to fly direct to Jeju-do! I do not need to spend unnecessary time in other places when I wish to spend all if not most of my time in Jeju-do. Yes, I felt very grateful. So, I have this to say to Air Asia; thank you for flying direct to Jeju-do. From the statistics reported in tourism articles I had read, noting the increase in visitors to Seoul and Busan since Air Asia flies direct to both, Jeju-do will likely experience the same increase, thus increase in economy through tourism. For the past 6 years that I have been visiting South Korea, I have personally seen the increase.

Generally, affordable fares offerred by Air Asia have allowed many people the opportunity to travel places. I do hope it will be more competitive in its pricing as I have noted somewhat uncompetitive fares thus me flying with Malaysia Airlines to Seoul, on business class. You can imagine the fare “discrepancies”. Nevertheless, again, the higher fare here has nothing to do with the add ons as my decision to fly Malaysia Airlines business class have always been after comparing against Air Asia business class fare. That should be logical.

Anyway, thanks to Air Asia I get to enjoy long weekend in Jeju-do and these –

P.S.

2. This is not a paid review

3. None of my trips mentioned were sponsored by Air Asia.

aim, My Elephant

So, appears as if I have gone on another hiatus, from posting anything here but I have been eating here and there. Every time, l thought, this time, l will write about it. Did not materialise until now. My apologies. Anyway, today l decided to write on the place l visited not too long ago to celebrate my brother getting his first paycheck as a cook. Good for him. We are all very proud of him. Also to have a surprise birthday party (not really party in that sense) of my youngest brother who turned 16.

Anyway, my brother made a reservation at a Thai restaurant called My Elephant. The reservation was for 830 pm. We were only allowed in at around 9 pm. We are aware of the crowd hence the reservation! This alone gave a bad impression to me. It did not start off well. So, we got in and were seated. We ordered the following and my views for each of them are provided underneath the photos.

image

Plah Nhung Manow (MYR 58) – Brilliant! I avoid eating fishes because I cannot take the smell and swallow that fishy taste of fish. Well, people said to me, if fishes do not taste fishy, how would a fish should taste like? I meant that slimy-not-clean taste. But this dish was far from fishy. It captured all the “essences” that the dish should have but without losing the tender taste and texture of the fish. l will give it 5 of 5.

image

Green Curry Chicken – (MYR32 for big serving and MYR19 for small serving) – This is supposed to be their best dish, came highly recommended by most reviewers. l beg to defer. I have tasted much better green curry from Sri Ayutthaya and Tamarind Springs. l will give it 3 of 5.

image

TomSom Seafood (MYR62 for 8 pax) – Good. It was good. It was how it should be. The hot taste of the soup kicks in after some idle time. You will not feel like the soup was hot when it goes into your mouth. So, be a little careful not to sip it too much at one go. I will give it 4 of 5.

We also ordered kailan and eggplants. They were okay. Both get 3 of 5. As for the rice, it was Hom Malee & Brown rice. I loved it. Not too dry, not too sticky, not too starchy. I will give it 4 of 5.

image

For desserts, we ordered mango with glutinous rice (MYR8.50) – Not that good. I was rather disappointed. To add on to that, the bowl used was chipped. How can any restaurant use chipped plates, bowls, glasses and such! I will give it 2 of 5. Not so much because the bowl was chipped but the taste was that a 2 of 5 to me.

Generally, summing up the service and the food quality, l will give My Elephant 3.5 of 5. It is unacceptable for patrons who made prior reservation not to be seated on time. We were there between 5 to 10 minutes earlier to ensure that we get to be seated at the time we were supposed to, but sadly, no. I find this unacceptable. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the pricing. In total, for 8 people, it cost us less than MYR400.

You can check the place out if you want an alternative to Tamarind but I would spend a bit more at Sri Ayutthaya for its more authentic taste. In the end, it is all about personal taste and preference.

My Elephant Restaurants are located in Section 17 PJ, Hartamas and Aman Suria. I visited the one in Section 17 PJ.

Facial Room Malaysia, It’s An Experience

15 Sat Mar 2014

Well, I usually try my best to stay true to my believe, that is as hard as I work, I play. I too am a strong believer of self love, as in to love one’s self so much that others will love you as much as you do.

So, in order to live life like that, I travel, I go to the gym, I play all sorts of sports, I go to spa, manicure/pedicure, etc. I love being cared for and pampered by the usual spa treatments and facial treatments. However, I do not really like to trouble myself though, in order to enjoy them. For example, I visit the gym on the way to work or home; convenient and economical. I get facial done at the place I get my body rejuvenating treatments. You get my drift.

So, not too long ago, I was invited by my sister to try having my facial done somewhere else, a place that does only facial. It is called Facial Room Malaysia. I am declaring here that although it is owned by my sister, as always, I will be impartial and unbiased in my opinion. Those close to me would agree that I do have this capabilities.

Let me start by saying that I love the facial place that I have been visiting for more than a year now. Not just because it is convenient since it is at my body spa but also because of the therapists and their techniques. Coming back to Facial Room Malaysia, it made reference to “room” appropriately as there is only one facial room. This gives you the assurance of some sort that focus is on you and there will be no rush attending to other customers. I do not know whether it is just me who feels that way … anyway, you will be required to fill in a form of which the therapist would be able to identify your skin problems and your concerns, and your allergies if any, which I think is good. I really do not like to have a conversation while pampering myself!

Once consultation is done, you are good to begin. I must say, I was very pleased. I did say earlier on that I love my current facial place and therapists and their techniques, but you would have to try this Facial Room Malaysia yourself to understand what I am about to say. From the moment the session began, the feeling was just … wonderful! The relaxing music and the non intrusive techniques are just so comforting! It felt like I was almost getting high on something. As a person with sleeping problem, having felt that comfort that almost immediately put me to sleep was just amazing! Seriously, am not being biased but go over and experience it yourself. Then tell me am biased!

Facial Room Malaysia uses United States based products called Paula’s Choice. There was no chemical smell, no strong perfume smells and felt just right for my skin. My thought, it was because the products used were based on the answers I provided in the form. I must admit, it was not just the products but the techniques too. At the price the experience is offered, I say you do not just have nothing to lose, instead, you have something to gain. So, do try Facial Room Malaysia to experience the comfort and gain some real quality service and “me time”. You would have to call prior to visiting as  only booked clients would be able to experience the session. Details are as follows –

BSC, cakes, just heavenly

Cakes, one of my favourite things… oh yes I love cakes. I do not consider cakes as desserts. No, cakes can be my main course and the desserts will be ice creams. You guys should check out Just Heavenly (http://justheavenly.biz/). The cakes there are simply heavenly… cliché… no, the truth. I got this Banana Chocolate for a colleague’s birthday and I got my self the Death by Chocolate, which was finisihed before a photo of it could be taken!

Chocolate Banana Cake from Just Heavenly

I give it 4 of 5 and I give Death by Chocolate PERFECT SCORE hahaha

Char Koay Teow Sg. Dua

So many people I know of have spoken about this very famous char koay teow. Supposedly one of the best char koay teow in the country! So, how can I not try it out, correct? The fact that I drive down to Pulau Pinang quite often makes it impossible for me to not eventually go to this place and try it out my self. In addition, I love char koay teow, particularly Penang char koay teow!

So, I went there with a whole bunch of people (my mom, 2 sisters, brother, aunt, cousin and cousin’s husband). Parking was a nightmare! Once the nightmare is over, another nightmare begins. The restaurant was packed. In fact it was a full house with no place to sit! However, we got lucky and did not have to wait too long to get tables. Yes we needed 2 tables, either the tables are small or there were too many of us… So, we ordered char koay teow for most of us and a couple of special char koay teow. It took almost forever for the food to come! We got sleepy and sort of ruined our appetite, but we tried to stay positive. Afterall, we heard good things about the char koay teow…

When the food finally arrive, to our surprise, the special char koay teow did not turn out to be what we expected. Ordinarily when we order special char koay teow, we will get extra prawns and cockle. Instead, the special char koay teow came with a sunny side up! Oh that is so not right! May not be wrong but it is not quite right… By the way, while we were waiting and thereafter eating, the crowd got bigger and people were actually standing and lining up in front of the restaurant!

Coming back to the famous Sg Dua char koay teow (so famous it has 2 branches at different locations!), I said to my brother, as he sat next to me, “Is it just me? Am I too particular about my food? Did I expect to much? Is it really true what people say about me having rather peculiar taste and preference for food?”… Too many questions that lead to only one answer from my brother, “Tak sedap sangat pun!”, which translates “Not very tasty/delicious!”. I was not sure whether I was right, that the char koay teow was not very tasty. However, everyone else had the same response! I was somewhat disappointed and I will give it 2.5/5. One more thing, the char koay teow came in such small plates that the dishes “fit in” just nicely in the plate, almost spilling out. My brother had to put his prawns in my plate (after I finish with my dish) to make space for the prawns in his plate…

ben's, KLCC, pasta, red velvet cake

I have heard not once but a few times from different resources about ben’s at KLCC. Most of the time, not good things. Therefore, I contemplated going/dining there but I thought I should experience it my self, good or bad.

So, I had gotten myself and a friend tickets for Stomp ’12. It was the afternoon show, so we decided to go out from morning, have a “tour” of KLCC and have lunch. Since it was to celebrate my friend’s birthday (a belated celebration and punishment for not wishing her on her birthday LOL), I let her decide on the itinerary of the day, including venue for lunch and dinner. Yes, we were out the whole day! She suggested ben’s. I agreed (with uncertainties deep within my heart!)

We arrived at ben’s sometime during lunch hour. I thought the place was going to be busy and crowded but to our luck, it was not that bad. Good sign? Bad sign? hmm… Anyway, we were attended to quite quickly. I ordered the Pad Thai Seafood Linguine and my friend ordered the Crispy Duck Confit Spaghettini. It did not take them too long to serve our orders. Here is my take on the two dishes –

(1) Pad Thai Seafood Linguine – Brilliant! I actually loved it! of course, I had no idea that it contains bean sprouts, which I do not take and I maintain my stand that beansprouts not only serve no purpose that it does not enhance the tast of food, in fact, it takes away the flavours! Nevertheless, I give this pasta 4.5/5

(2) Crispy Duck Confit Spaghettini – This pasta was excellent as well! I would not order anything “duck-y” and thanks to my friend for ordering it, I discovered another good dish! I give this pasta 4/5

Since it was supposed to be a birthday celebration, belated or otherwise, cake is necessary. My friend ordered Ben’s Chocolate Cake, recommended by the waiter and I ordered the Red Velvet Cake. I am secretly going around town trying out Red Velvet. Actually, I just realised that I have been doing that, without realising it! Here is my take on the cakes –

(1) Ben’s Chocolate Cake – OK. I have tasted (a lot) better chocolate cakes. It is “saved” by the cream ice cream. I give it 3/5

(2) Red Velvet Cake – Good! I love the cream cheese. I give it 4/5

This will be a quick short post. Lunch is always a quick one and I do not have much to say, other than… Well, I had a good lunch on Friday!

The very moment I arrived, the waitress waived happily at me that I was a bit surprised. You know, that experience which you feel like, “what? She knows me? Have I been here THAT often?!”

And as I said, I had a good lunch. Had the Cajun Chicken with iced lemon tea. I like the sauce. If I have to rate the food, I will give 3.5 out of 5. Although I like the chicken and the sauce, the sides were… Lets see, there were sliced carrots and broccoli and potatoes with cream (not sure about the cream). The carrots and broccoli were a bit too cooked. A light steam should do. Well, that is how I prefer my vegetables. And the potatoes, it is fine, just fine the way it was.

My colleague had the steak and she said it was good.

Nasi Lemak Bumbung… Yes, Seriously, Bumbung as in Roof!

02 Fri Dec 2011

Posted by Gina WNDR in from the deck, from the lab

No am not kidding! That place is called Bumbung, which in English translates to “roof”. I saw no relevance between the place and the name and the food served!

My brother was supposed to decide where to go for a nice nasi lemak. Ever since I came back from my UK holidays, I had been having this constant want for nasi lemak. God knows why although I do love nasi lemak, especially those with really hot “sambal”. So, instead of telling me the name or location, all he did was point the direction. He said turn right, turn left, go straight, do not stop at that traffic light… no he did not say that last bit ;D

The area was all too familiar. I do go there every now and then but have never been to that actual location where Bumbung is located. If you happened to just pass by the place, you may miss it. Also, would you be surprised if I say, it was at an alley, an alley behind old shops! Well guess what, I was shocked my self when we finally got there and my brother said, “Oh, by the way, this place is at a lorong belakang kedai!”. I went, “Ha?!” For those who know me, have you heard me say, “Come go to that gerai behind that street”? No, please do not answer ;p

And then, for the second time, I got a shock of my life! Not sure whether it qualifies as one of “the shock of my life” kind of shock but I was indeed shocked! The alley was so squeaky clean that I just… I do not know what to say, I have never seen an alley as clean and to a certain extent, beautiful as that! The road was clean, the whole alley was decorated with small potted trees and there were those colourful little wind fans! There were those small industrial fans to keep the area ventilated and cool and it was well lighted with sufficient lights. Seriously, you should perhaps just drop by for a look-see, if you can not bring your self to eat there.

Now, down to the main reason we were there, nasi lemak ayam goreng! The rice was just nice, not too “lemak”. The sambal was, well, so-so to me but since I have somewhat high level of hot and spicy endurance and “acquired” taste when it comes to sambal, it may be just nice to others. My brother liked it. The fried chicken (ayam goreng) and the sunny side up, was, well, it was mamak fried chicken and for crying out loud, a sunny side up, what can I say? If I have to rate the whole package, I will give 3.5 out of 5. But for the place itself, I have to give 4.5 out of 5. Oh, one more thing, the place was packed and I thought it was inappropriate for me to snap photos of the place when I will, as a result, be capturing photos of the patrons. But I do have a really closed up photo of the food.

Any of you would like to suggest any place for me to try or check out, please let me know ya. Thanks.

Belanga at the International Food Hall, the Intermark

So, we put those photos away for a while, and let us get down with some writing on food.

Having lunch in this area (where my current office is located, at the other end of Jalan Tun Razak, in Kg Baru), is always a “chore” and a bore. Day in day out, it is either this or that or here or there and we will often end up at the same few eateries.

Yesterday, a friend offered to take me out for lunch. By “take me out” means driving out, which we only do on Fridays. We actually officially have only 45 minutes for lunch and driving out means taking more time…. So, we drove (or rather he drove) to the Intermark at the Double Tree by Hilton. The rest of the gang had not tried the new International Food Hall. I had been there a number of occasions. We had –

Nasi Dagang set that came with choice of either beef rendang or fried chicken (I had the beef rendang and it was good). Also came with the set was “kueh of the day”. The second time yesterday it was the same kueh of the day the week before!  Oh and also, choice of either sirap selasih or iced lemon tree for drinks. Coincidentally. Three of us had the same food with only one with a different choice of drink!

The “driver” friend and another had Subway. Well, I find no real need to talk about their lunch ;D

A little about the place. The International Food Hall does not appear like the usual Malaysian malls’ food courts or rather nowadays referred to as the food hall. It has only a handful of “stalls” opened with somewhat big space allocated for each and the areas appear to be under utilised. But hey, if the owner of that place does not need too many occupants, that is his choice but the consumers are left with limited choice, which usually results in the consumers opting for other places. I for one, find the place “cosy”. I do not like food courts, so I suppose that is why.

Oh, there is also the Italian restaurant, Porto Romano at the food hall. Perhaps you can check the place out and try the different food they offer.

Montel (Chubby) Me at Monte’s at BSC

Nevermind the title. It is just something spontaneous (although I do feel a little bit “montel” lately ;D)

So, I frequent the BSC a lot lately. That is one of my favourite malls. Not too crowded and nothing much for me to buy. What matter is good food, good time, good company.

Now, Monte’s (http://www.montesrestaurant.com.my/index.html) is not located at a unit where it can easily be found but if you are familiar with the BSC, it will be easy to locate. Anyways, the BSC is not a complicated mall that you will give up trying to locate shops after trying for 10 minutes.

The moment we got in the restaurant, we were greeted very warmly. That is a good beginning to a good time. Sometimes, one may get influenced by the kind warm welcome in judging the food. I will give my views here without being affected by the beautiful interior and the warm welcome. This is not too difficult to do as I have been here before ;D.

Here goes –

(1) Chef’s Dream Salad – just nice although not brilliantly tasteful, but honestly, I do not think it is meant to taste otherwise, so I would say again, just right

(2) Spaghetti Marinara – like I said to my friend, the best I have tasted thus far!

(3) Fettuccine Carbonara – I did not actually have this at this visit but I think it is worth mentioning now. It was good although may be a little too thick (the cream sauce I mean)

There is a huge chance that there will be more visits to this place… I would suggest you try this place when you are at the BSC either just to wine or dine.

Recently, I made my second visit to the Dancing Fish restaurant located at the Bangsar Shopping Complex @ BSC. Glad to say that the service and the food are still good. This time around, the dishes were actually served rather quick! Oh yes, my apologies. For you who are not familiar with it, Dancing Fish serves Sundanese food.

Dishes that I had recently are and my findings of the dishes are as follows –

(1) Beef Rendang – a bit salty for me but the beef were very tender and the rendang flavour could be tasted in the beef

(2) Chicken Rendang – the rendang sauce was good but the chicken was a bit too “done”

(3) BBQ Chicken – I just love it!

(4) Kailan with Oyster Sauce – it is just how it should be

(5) Terong Belado – the eggplant, has never been a dish that I would consider having part of my spread but I have no problem ordering it again whenever I visit this place again. That is how good it was.

And perhaps you will be delighted to know that the barley (iced or hot) are refillable i.e. free flow.

The price range, I suppose rather “standard” considering all sorts of points and factors.

P.s. – no photos for this post due to reasons can not be disclosed ;D

2nd Visit – the Social @KL for Iftar

26 Fri Aug 2011

Well yes, I re-visited the Social @KL. This time for Iftar. What will you do if you keep seeing advertisement on delicious looking food, served specially for Iftar? My they looked yummy!

So, considering how most people see the Social @KL as “the place”, I thought a reservation would be necessary. I called in. At the beginning of the conversation, I was a little taken aback. The conversation was a little awkward but dwell not on information not food related!

So, the day of the visit, I got there not too early, not too late but found myself standing there at the entrance fiddling with my beloved Bold. No, not because I was too shy but because no one was really manning that little reception booth but I have to say, once one of the hostess got to me, she was all nice and accommodating, but again, let us dwell not on things not food related!

Let us just proceed with the food, those advertised and led me there for a 2nd visit. I asked the waitress’ opinion whether I should go for the chicken rendang or the beef rendang (honestly I had in mind the beef rendang) and she suggested the beef rendang. Beef rendang is beef stewed Malay style (and I love rendang!). It was served with deep-fried bean curd, sambal, acar, some crackers, salted egg (which I do not eat) and minestrone soup (which I found although tasty, a little odd to be served with rendang). This set came with kuih-muih, desert of the day (which I asked the waitress and was told that she does not know what is the desert of the day), which turned out to be this sweet thing with bananas in it (pengat pisang, not sure what is in English), which was not too bad but too sweet to my liking. I also ordered homemade peach tea, which was not too bad as well and sirap selasih (and I did not realise that it was not “really” part of the set and in fact additional).

So, this are my take on the food –

Beef rendang – really good. The beef was really tender. The rendang (gravy) was really tasty (and my friend agreed that he had to finish the last bit I left for him with his rice, which he originally did not intend to finish!).

Deep fried bean curd – it is just fried bean curd, how can it go wrong, right? (which means I have no issue with it)

Sambal – not bad at all.

Crackers – there were 2 types and again, they are just crackers, how can it possibly go wrong?

Kuih-muih – not memorable but not too bad either.

Desert of the day (pengat pisang) – you may like it if you like pengat pisang.

Homemade peach tea – good especially the ice cream like thing in it. It actually looked like a peach but it was some sort of blended ice with peach flavour to it.

Sirap selasih – hmm not too sure but not to my liking.

(no photos for this visit as I am currently too lazy to transfer them to my laptop. Sorry ;p)

p/s. to each their own and I have been told that I have a rather peculiar taste and that am rather picky with my food, which means, my views may not be the same as yours. Also, perhaps it was my luck that I was served by one who said she is not Malaysian when asked about the food (not Malaysian does not mean you cannot respond but for her benefit, I would rather say she probably meant to say she cannot speak in Malay… not that she and I cannot speak in English) and one who does not know her menu. Would I consider a 3rd visit? I cannot say. I do not know. Perhaps…

Twice in a Day and the 2nd Round was at Levain

Oh yes! Twice in a day I was treated for my birthday! The 2nd birthday treat was dinner at Levain. The ambiance was great! I felt calm and delighted the moment I stepped in… but the delight rate goes down steadily, which means the beginning of what a review on something not quite good is happening. But hey, you should continue on reading a little more. I have only heard of the place and so, my maiden visit was for my birthday treat and here it goes…

First, a little bit about the place… no not really

As the place employs the modus operandi of self-service, there are “procedures” or rather steps that one need to follow. One must first find a table of one’s choice (of course!), then one goes to the counter where one shall place one’s orders where one is required to inform the table number. The orders will be delivered to the table. No, one can not just go back to one’s place and wait for the orders to arrive. One will have to take on one’s own, the cutleries (in my case, even the serving plates!). Then one can sit at one’s table and wait for the orders to arrive. My concern when I was at the counter with my friend placing our orders was “what if someone chooses the same table thinking that the table is not yet taken?”. This question should also be in Levain’s mind. Do not expect your customers to know which table is taken and which is not. Do not also make your customers choose who amongst them should wait at the table while the other place his/her order (this is in the event customers come in groups of 2 or more). What if a lone ranger walks in? How can he make sure that his table is not taken whilst he is placing his order at the counter?

Now, the food

My friend had Seafood Aglio Olio, which she said was good and I had to wait forever for my Thai Pasta. Yes, my friend was done with hers when mine came. The birthday girl had to wait! The Thai Pasta tasted more like Assam Laksa than anything else. I was expecting it to have tom yam taste to it but no, it did not. We also had the Margherita Pizza. It was ok, although not brilliant. I will not say that it was bad but I will not say it was good either. So, there you go, a very brief review of the food at Levain.

End of the day, what I have to say is…

Nice ambiance and deco will not suddenly magically make the experience great! Will I go there again and try other items on the menu? I suppose I will give them a 2nd chance… another shot. I believe in giving 2nd chances. Just 2nd chances, 3rd or 4th are generally out of the question ;D

Anyhow, there was an incident when my friend called the waiter more than twice and I am very certain that he could hear her, but he just walked away! Why am I so certain that he could hear her you ask? Well, we sat outside, way at the back where it was very quite and people were talking softly!

Also, the second time I had to go to the counter to place the order for my drink I saw at the counter, dinner set promotion, which the lady at the counter did not highlight to us when we placed our orders earlier. I wonder why… Perhaps she forgot about it, it being Saturday and all.

One more thing, I read reviews that actually said one has to pay for the parking. We did not however, were asked to pay for the parking (thank God for that, otherwise….OMG!)

p.s. – Weekends are when eateries are tested for their performance, by their patrons/customers. Not being able to perform well or at least as good as they do on weekdays can make them look bad. Eateries operators are aware that it is the busiest on weekends and something must be done to ensure good service performance.

You can check the place out here – http://www.levain.com.my/
